Everyone has trials in life. The Bible speaks of trials as testings or temptations.
Christ Jesus was severely tested and tempted. Moses also was tested. Moses foreshadowed the trials that came to Jesus for Moses spoke of Jesus.
Their testings were divinely ordained. The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted. The Lord led Israel into the wilderness where it was tested (Exodus 14:1,11,12).
The testings were purposeful. They were to test Israel to see if it would obey the Lord (Deut.8:2). Jesus was tempted to see whether he would obey the Father’s will.
The testings were painful. On one occasion Moses cried out “What shall I do with this people?” (Exodus 17:4). Jesus felt the pain of the temptation in the wilderness. Physically, he was hungry. Spiritually, he felt the devil’s evil offers. But he resisted and obeyed the Father’s will.
The Lord provides escape from trials. Israel saw the Red Sea parted and a way to safety. Later, Israel faced the threat from Goliath but the Lord raised up a deliverer — David. The Jews were threatened with extermination but saw the provision of escape in the person of Queen Esther. Paul, suffering from a thorn in the flesh saw a way of escape – God’s grace. And Jesus, enduring all the pain of his trials, found escape by the promises of the Father. He saw the travail of his soul and was satisfied. God will always give a way of escape. God’s people may falter but a falter is not a fall. Christians, take comfort in this.
Let us in our trials remember that the Lord is faithful to his people. He holds them in his hands and no one can snatch them from those hands. The Lord may permit dilemma in our faith but he shall not permit its destruction. Be assured of this.
God sends trials to test faith, not to terminate it. Trials are passing; salvation is lasting. Rest in this glorious truth.
But do not be careless. Paul exhorted the Corinthians to “flee from idolatry” (1 Cor. 11:1). Repent and flee from your sins. Temptations are not here to trip you up but to test your obedience to the Lord. Yield to the Lord; not to temptation.
After Jesus was tempted the angels came and ministered to him. After your trials the Lord will draw near and bless you. May his words, — “Well done you good and faithful servant,” resound in your ears.
