The Risen Lord (Luke 24:1-12)
Sermon Summary
Pastor David Yan
9 April 2023
Announced first to women. They were devoted; childlike. Endeared themselves to Jesus. They manifested that which women find some fulfilment, namely showing compassion. Eve was created a helper. These daughters of Eve did a great work in seeking to anoint the body of Jesus. They had earlier cared for his needs. They provided for him (Luke 8:3).
They faced obstacles. The great stone blocked entry to the cave. They recognised this obstacle (Mark 16:3). The obstacle was supernaturally removed by angels. We face obstacles if we seek Jesus. But he removes all obstacles. Those who seek him will find him.
The angel announced, "he is not here, but is risen." They quoted what Jesus taught. Jesus spoke continually about his death and resurrection. The women (and disciples) did not understand. But when reminded they remembered.
They told the disciples. They did not believe. They judged the women to be speaking idle tales. The disciples lacked discernment.
But Peter was moved and ran to investigate. He saw the linen cloths lying by themselves. Evidence of resurrection seen.
Resurrection of the body is hard to believe. People can be spiritually minded but reject resurrection. Peter experienced this (Acts 4:2). Paul also. He preached in Athens. The people listened until he preached resurrection. Then he was mocked (Acts 17:32).
When people believe in resurrection it is because of the work of the Holy Spirit. Faith from beginning to end is a work of God. But it is a work which does not ride over the freedom of human action.
This Easter be like the women who came to the tomb. They were enlightened. You also will understand the angelic announcement, "He is not here; but is risen."
