Conversion and Baptism of an Outsider (Acts 8:26-40)
Sermon Summary

Today we shall witness the baptism of two young men. It is fitting we consider Acts 8:26-40 where an Ethiopian eunuch was converted and baptised.
The Ethiopian was an outsider in that he was not an Israelite. But he was a follower of the Jewish religion.
He worshipped the God of the Hebrews.
He had gone to Jerusalem to worship and was returning to Ethiopia and was reading the prophet Isaiah. We understand therefore he must have had some dealings with the Hebrews. Salvation comes via the Jews. God’s message via the Jews is for the whole world.
Note salvation is progressive. This man was gradually brought to a knowledge of who Jesus was. First, receive the Scriptures. Then receive the Saviour.
He was reading Isaiah but he needed help to understand. Philip asked the eunuch if he understood what he was reading. He answered how could he unless someone guides him. The eunuch was teachable.
Philip guided this man to faith in Jesus. Today we have the Spirit to guide us into all truth. He uses preachers and teachers to guide us. But we must be teachable— like the eunuch.
Isaiah 53:7,8 is about Jesus for Philip expounded it and preached Jesus as its fulfilment. Isaiah 53:7,8 points to Jesus and no-one else.
The eunuch came to understood this and expressed he believed that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God.
Note his immediate obedience to be baptised. Philip must have spoken about baptism to the eunuch for him to respond as he did. He was baptised there and then. Not only was he teachable; he was obedient.
The eunuch returns to his country with great joy. There is joy when Jesus comes into one’s life.
His job done, Philip is mysteriously whisked away. But the eunuch is not left alone for the Holy Spirit abides with God’s people, and the eunuch is now numbered with such people.
The eunuch went to Jerusalem with a head knowledge of the Old Testament. He returns with a heart knowledge of Jesus. What made the difference? It was because he heard about and believed in Jesus.
Outsiders can be converted. By nature we are all outsiders being outside the kingdom of God. We who are naturally distant are supernaturally drawn near. It's all about Jesus who draws us to our Creator. Trust him. We have a great salvation which befits a great Saviour.
