Confessing Christ (Luke 12:8-12)
Sermon Summary

What is confession? It is a verbal witness. Use mouth to testify. It is also a lifestyle witness. Use the way you live to testify of Jesus.
Confessing Jesus is to own him by the way you speak and live. When a criminal confesses his crime he “owns-up”. Christians may not be criminals but when they confess Jesus they own up to being his followers.
Who is the subject of our confession? It is, of course, Jesus. He spoke of people confessing him.
They speak of his birth, death and resurrection. They speak of his second coming and the glory of the future new heaven and earth.
Jesus knows those who confess him. He shall own them on the day of judgment. Jesus also knows those who deny him. He shall disown them on that same day.
Jesus spoke about the unforgivable sin. It is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. This is the continual life-long rejection of the Holy Spirit’s work. People saw the undeniable work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit but they attributed this to the work of the devil (Luke 11:15). This is blasphemy.
Jesus spoke these things to disciples who were facing opposition. They would be brought before governing authorities. But they were not to worry for the Holy Spirit would teach them in that very hour what to say. The Holy Spirit shall bear witness. We are merely God’s mouthpiece.
There shall be a final judgment. Deniers of Jesus shall themselves be denied, but those who confess Jesus shall be owned by him before the angels of God.
The angels were God’s messengers in previous ages but now Christians are God’s messengers. On the day of judgment angels shall come with Christ and the message of salvation shall be consummated.
Confess Christ Jesus now by owning him as Lord. Serve him. He will not forsake you. Deny him in this temporal world and he will deny you in the eternal world. This is the teaching of Jesus. We shall stand before him on the day of judgment.
