When Israel was delivered from Egypt it began its pilgrimage. Christians once delivered from the dominion of darkness begin their pilgrimage.

Note some characteristics of pilgrims.

First, Israel was required to consecrate its first-born to the Lord. The first-born is most precious and Israel was to give its most precious thing to the Lord. Christians must give their very best to the Lord.

Then there is remembrance. Israel must remember its deliverance from Egypt and teach their children. Christians are also required to remember the mighty acts of God. The Lord's Supper is an opportunity to recall the salvation God has accomplished through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Pilgrims are guided by the Lord. Israel experienced this. Christians also. We are not left alone. The Lord guided Peter to Cornelius. He guided Paul to Macedonia. He will guide us to heaven where he has gone to prepare a place for us. This world is not our home. We are just passing through.

Separation from the world is another characteristic of pilgrims. Israel was not led directly to the promised land but by a different route. Israel was to be kept apart from the nations. Christians are to be separate from the world, not physically, but in spirit and thought.

These characteristics of pilgrims were all present in the life of Jesus. Jesus was consecrated to the Father. He always remembered the purpose for which he came. He was guided in his life as for instance when he was driven into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Jesus was on a pilgrimage for his eyes were set on Jerusalem and heaven and the glory that awaited him.

Let us follow Jesus. He sets the example of pilgrimage. He came from heaven to earth and then returned to heaven. With Jesus in our hearts we travel the path to heaven. We are just pilgrims.
