Saul of Tarsus was a blasphemer and a persecutor—an insolent man (1 Tim. 1:13). But he was changed by Christ Jesus. How did this happen?

Saul was on his way to Damascus to harass Christians. He had been deceived and so persecuted the church. Deceit and violence are marks of the devil (John 8:44).

The devil has always been behind deceit and violence in the world. Cain was deceived and he killed his brother. In Noah's time the earth was filled with corruption and violence. Today, wherever you see deceit and violence, you can be sure its source is the devil. In politics, in religion, in life in general, when people believe in lies; when people are violent, it is a work of the devil.

Jesus confronted Saul. Jesus was alive. He was aware of what Saul was doing. He overwhelmed Saul. Saul cried out "Who are you, Lord?" An encounter with Jesus leads to the inevitable question—-who is Jesus?

Saul is a chosen vessel of God. He was to be a preacher to the Gentiles and the whole world. You cannot understand history without an understanding of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus. Saul would suffer in his ministry. He received much spiritual insight. He received much suffering. He must keep humble.

Jesus restored Saul's eyesight. Saul, blinded by the light from heaven can now see clearly. It was not just physical vision but also spiritual vision. He now recognises Jesus as the Messiah.

Saul is led into Damascus by his hand, like a helpless child. Jesus puts down the strong and mighty and renders them helpless.

Saul is changed. He is baptised. He is filled with the Holy Spirit. He joins the disciples. He who came to destroy the church now joins the church. What a turnaround! If Saul can be turned, so can you. No one is beyond redemption.

Non Christians, know your nature. You are fallen. Either you are a Christ-hater or a Christ-follower. There is no middle ground. Non believers are at enmity with God (Romans 5:10).

Christians, make progress in the faith. Saul made quick progress. He joined the disciples and immediately preached the Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

Jesus changes lives. He changed Saul. He can change you. Begin this new year a changed person. Believe in the Lord Jesus and be saved. Be joined to his church.
