The Predetermined Death and Resurrection of Jesus (Luke 18:31-32)
Sermon Summary
Pastor David Yan
1 December 2024
Before Jesus’ birth there was a heightened expectation in the community. Peter confessed Jesus was the Messiah. People marveled at the power of Jesus in casting out an evil spirit. There was excitement in the air.
On three occasions in Luke’s gospel Jesus foretold his death and resurrection (Luke 9:21-22; 9:43-45; 18:31-34).
Note the three verbs Jesus used: rejected, betrayed and delivered.
Jesus was rejected by his own people.
Jesus was betrayed by his own disciple.
Jesus was delivered to the Gentiles for crucifixion.
The entire human race implicated in the death of Jesus.
All have sinned – Jews, Gentiles, and antichrists in the church.
Jesus’ death was foreordained. But Jesus was not a robot. He had feelings.
As a boy he realized more and more that he was to be crucified. At the age of 12 he was able to debate with the Jewish elders. Jesus obeyed the divine will at the cost of his life.
He was killed as prophesied even though he was innocent.
He was raised as prophesied even though he had actually died.
The hearers did not understand what Jesus was saying. But later they understood.
The hearers were told to tell no one. But later they were to tell everyone. The disciples understood progressively. We also.
Have you come to believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus?
Has the Holy Spirit opened your heart to Jesus Christ?
Now is the day of salvation. Repent of your unbelief. Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.
