The Perfect Inheritance (1 Peter 1:3-5)

Sermon Summary

Brother Daniel

20 December 2020

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again
to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away,
reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith
for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 Peter 1:3-5

Continuing in Peter, we see him exalting Jesus by calling Him Lord using the same phraseology as the Old Testament uses of God. Like in verse two, we see Trinitarian language used very naturally by the apostles. Jesus is our God become man, born as a baby in Bethlehem to bring us to God (3:18).

God's grace and mercy is seen in us making born again to a living hope. Without God's prior work to make us born again we would never seek Him or believe. We are dead in sins. We need to be born again, drawn to the light and given the gift of faith to put our trust in God for the future blessings of our glorious inheritance.

This living hope is the lifeblood of every Christian. Unbelievers are without hope in the world and they need to hear this message of hope. Even as believers we sometimes have our hope invested in our earthly possessions. May God divest us of that soul destroying tendency and enable us to look to Him and the wonder of the inheritance He has planned for us. We will have perfect comfort, peace, joy, security and satisfaction when He will wipe away every tear from our eyes and share the endless pleasures of being in His presence.

His work of giving us faith and keeping us in the faith is what will get us there. Let's call upon Him for a more and deeper faith that allows us to be generous with our earthly possessions and bless those around us.
