The Magnetism of Jesus Christ (Matthew 2:1-12)
Sermon Summary

I live near Eden Park. When there is an international game at the Park I see many people heading toward it. The Park is like a magnet.
We read in the Bible that many people flocked after Jesus. He was like a magnet. Consider now his magnetism.
The wise men saw the star and were drawn to follow it until it rested over Jesus. Jesus, like a magnet, drew the Gentiles to himself.
The mysterious star was drawn by the magnetism of Jesus. Jesus orders the heavenly bodies and they act according to his will. He ordered the flood waters at the time of Noah’s judgment. He will order the elements to melt with fervent heat at the last day (2 Peter 3:10-12).
The wise men brought precious gifts to Jesus - gold, frankincense and myrrh.
The earth’s treasures belong to Jesus and he magnetically drew them to himself - just as it was foretold in Psalm 72:10 and Isaiah 60:5-7.
The Old Testament prophets spoke as they we moved by the Holy Spirit. Since the prophets spoke of Jesus Christ we understand that it was Jesus who was speaking through the prophets. He drew the prophets to speak as they did - about him!
Even demons and evil people are drawn to Jesus - but in an evil way. King Herod sought to kill Jesus. He killed young boys two years old and under. Jesus elicits hate and destruction from his enemies. Darkness cannot stand the light when it is present. The demons could not stand the presence of Jesus.
From Matthew 2:1-12 we see the pre-eminence of Jesus Christ.
Note that when the wise men entered the house where Jesus was they saw the child. The wise men went straight to Jesus. Mary was not the center of attention. She was, as it were, merely a spectator when it came to the wise men finding Jesus. Jesus, at birth and infancy, had preeminence - even over his mother Mary.
This Christmas let each one of us search our hearts as to whether we have been drawn by the magnetism of Jesus Christ. If we have not been drawn to Jesus we have probably been drawn to other things - things which do not enrich the soul, and who in a right frame of mind, wants to be impoverished in their souls?
