The Day of Pentecost (Acts 2)
Sermon Summary
24 May 2026
Pastor David Yan
The day of Pentecost is the day the Holy Spirit descended on the early church and empowered it to witness.
It was an extraordinary moment. The sound of a mighty wind, the appearance of fiery tongues resting above the disciples, and the disciples speaking in foreign languages were all supernatural happenings. Pentecost was God visiting the church. He has not left the church but now resides permanently.
The day of Pentecost was foretold. When Peter stood and explained the Pentecostal phenomenon he linked it to Old Testament prophecy, specifically, Joel chapter 3 and Psalm 16. What religion can claim prophecy and prophetic fulfilment as Christianity?
The Day of Pentecost was Christ-centred. It was all about Jesus.
The Holy Spirit came to bear testimony to Jesus. Consider Jesus.
He was foreordained to die. God the Father predetermined the crucifixion of Jesus. Yet Jesus was taken by lawless hands and crucified and put to death. This is an antinomy. God is sovereign; he ordains everything. But people are accountable. They are not robots.
The day of Pentecost was convicting and converting. The hearers of Peter’s sermon were convicted of their sins calling out “What must we do to be saved?” They were converted. They turned to God in repentance and were saved.
The church grew. People gathered for fellowship. It was later to include Gentiles. This expansion was foretold in the Festival of Weeks in Leviticus where the Lord instructed the Hebrews to leave some of their harvest to the poor and to strangers which points to expansion of the church to include Gentiles.
The church still grows today. Jesus is building his church. Christians should rejoice. The Holy Spirit is working today. He convicts people of sin and turns them to the Saviour. Continue to evangelise. Jesus did not die in vain. He shall call his people to faith. Your work for him is not in vain.
The Holy Spirit helps believers in their struggles. He directs us to Jesus and we find in him our refuge and shelter. Whatever your need is, take it to Jesus in prayer. He is in a position to give; we are in a position to receive.
Thank God for the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is with us to witness that Jesus is on the throne. He rules from heaven. Everything is under his control and we find rest in him. Presidents and prime ministers do not rule the world although they have a part to play. It is Jesus who rules the universe. Pentecost is all about this rule. Celebrate Pentecost. Jesus reigns.
