Sermon Summary

Israel was threatened by the Philistines and their champion, Goliath. The spirit of Goliath is here today. It threatens the church. It is an antichristian spirit. But the living God in the days of David raised up an anointed deliverer---David himself. He does so today. Jesus is the anointed deliverer. Jesus is foreshadowed by David.

David was anointed by the Holy Spirit. Jesus, the Son of David, was also anointed. This was when he was baptised.

David was the least likely to be Israel’s deliverer. He spoke of himself as poor and lightly esteemed. Jesus was despised and rejected—the unlikeliest man, humanly speaking, to deliver God’s people.

David was zealous for God’s purposes. He described Goliath as an uncircumcised Philistine. David believed the covenantal promise given to his forefather Abraham and was zealous for the cause. Jesus also was zealous for God’s purposes. His cleansing of the temple proved this. The temple had become a den of thieves. Zeal for the house of God consumed Jesus.

David fought Goliath with his own weaponry. He chose a sling and five stones. Jesus fought the devil with unorthodox weaponry. He died on a cross. He fought evil on his terms. His death on the cross was not what the devil or the world expected. Goliath did not expect to be killed by a stone and sling. The devil did not expect to be defeated by the foolishness of preaching. The cross was God’s way. Our weapons are not carnal but spiritual.

David showed faith. He faced Goliath in the name of the God of Israel. He was sure God would deliver him from Goliath. Jesus trusted the Father. As he was dying, he said, “Into your hands I commit my spirit.” The fact that David chose five stones for his sling does not mean he lacked faith. Rather, it shows that faith does not abandon planning and common sense.

David triumphs over Goliath. Goliath cursed God. He was proud and arrogant. God smote him. God brings down the proud and exalts the humble.

The result of David’s victory was that the nation of Israel was emboldened. They pursued the Philistines. The church stands tall when the enemy falls.

The lesson for us is God is living and he delivers his people through Christ Jesus, the Son of David. Jesus is our anointed deliverer.

Whatever your circumstances are, remember God is the living God. He will deliver you from any threats you face. Israel was delivered. Israel had an anointed deliverer---David. We have an anointed deliverer---Jesus, the Son of David. Trust him. Praise Him.
