Persevering In God’s Calling (2 Timothy 3:10-17; 4:1-5)

Sermon Summary

Pastor David Yan

Paul counsels Timothy to persevere in God’s calling. He gives Timothy some encouragements. There are three, and these three are for believers today.

First, there are examples of people who have persevered. Paul himself is an example for Timothy. He writes for instance of his own manner of life and faith. We have wonderful examples of believers who persevered in the faith. Are you familiar with Church history? If not, I would say your faith is stunted. Why be stunted? Others have gone before you. Be encouraged by them.

Secondly, there are the teachings of doctrines that Timothy had been taught. He must continue in them. Timothy had been taught by the apostle. He had been taught by his grandmother and mother. Thank God for godly women who make the time to teach young people the Christian faith.

We have inherited a glorious body of truth. We have the teachings of the Protestant Reformers, the Puritans and the Confessions of Faith such as the Westminster and London Baptist Confessions. Hold steadily to truths received in this life. They will hold you steady into eternal life.

Thirdly, there are the Holy Scriptures. Timothy must immerse himself in the Scriptures. We must do likewise. Study the Bible not just by memorising verses but by understanding the theology of the Bible. God our Creator has spoken. Through Jesus Christ and him alone is there salvation. Hear the voice of God. He speaks through the Bible. Study it if you would persevere.

The lesson for Timothy is that he must fulfil his ministry. Just as Paul, the master, fulfilled his ministry. Timothy, the follower, must do likewise.

Life has meaning. There was a purpose for Timothy’s life. There is a purpose for your life. Seek God’s will for you and live purposefully. Come to faith in Christ Jesus and Iike Paul and Timothy persevere in the calling God gives you.
