Noah's Flood (Psalm 29, Matthew 24:36-44)
Sermon Summary

The universal flood in the days of Noah had at least three characteristics.
First, it was sudden. At an hour people least expected it came with devastating velocity. And this despite Noah's having preached about it to his generation. Hearing does not lead to heeding when the hearts of people are hard.
So also, when Jesus Christ comes to establish a new heaven and earth people will not be expecting it. He shall come like a thief in the night. He shall come suddenly. The gospel forewarns people but they do not listen.
Secondly, it was unstoppable. The rain fell from heaven and the fountains of the great deep burst out and flooded the earth. Noah's great flood was unstoppable.
So it shall be when Jesus returns. No one shall stop him. His coming is certain. It is unstoppable. In the recent floods near our church hall people could only watch as the waters damaged their houses. The floods were unstoppable.
Thirdly, the flood brought changes. Noah's flood brought judgement to a wicked world. It also brought a fresh start for humanity. Noah and his descendants would repopulate the world.
So when Jesus returns there shall be changes. The church will be gathered to him. The unbelieving world will reap the punishment for its rebellion against God. There will be a new heaven and a new earth.
Through all the floods of life the Lord is in control (Psalm 29:10). Therefore be watchful. When the flood of final judgement comes you will either be safe in the arms of Jesus or washed away. There is no third way.
