The Solid Foundation of God (2 Timothy 2:19)
Sermon Summary

In the early Christian Church there were people who were inconstant. They overthrew the faith of others.
But God is constant. His foundation is solid. Paul writes to Timothy about this — the solid foundation of God.
Foundations are established principles relating to such things as politics, morals, religion. They are the building blocks of well-ordered societies.
God’s foundation is his plan of salvation. According to this plan he sent Jesus Christ to build his church.
From eternity the Lord God planned to save sinners. His plan is unchangeable. Jesus came and set his face like a flint to go to Jerusalem to die. The death of Jesus is proof of God’s unwavering plan to save people. Jesus did not withdraw from the cross. The Father will not withdraw from the Christ.
God’s plan is effectual. His plan is solid and stands. It shall achieve its desired end. People are made into new people through Christ Jesus. He did not die in vain. He died purposefully; he saves permanently. His death was certain; our salvation is certain.
God’s foundation-plan to save people is consummated. False teachers seek to tear people away from God but the Lord is triumphant. The false teachers are antichrists who begin in the church but eventually leave it. True believers are forever married to Christ. The bride remains true to the groom and the groom remains forever true to his bride.
God’s plan of salvation is sealed. A seal signifies ownership. The Lord owns his plan by sealing it. It cannot be opened by anyone except the Lord himself. No one can break the seal and intrude or detract from the foundation of salvation. We are safe in the hands of Jesus and no one can snatch us away. What God seals belongs to him. To be sealed by God is to be forever his.
God’s plan to save is fixed. But it does not remove human responsibility to repent and to depart from all iniquity. There is perfect balance between God’s eternal plan to save people and people’s present responsibility to repent and live godly lives.
Believers are required to live godly lives. Paul exhorts Timothy to live a holy life. The evidence of true faith is godliness which is the outworking of faith.
Timothy is to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness. He is to avoid useless discussions and arguments. He is to be gentle to everyone and humble in correcting opponents.
