Sermon Summary

Brother Daniel

6 December 2020

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To the pilgrims of the Dispersion … elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

1 Peter 1:1-2

Last week we began our series on 1 Peter. Peter, although very flawed and publicly seen as such, serves as a good model for us that God can use anyone to accomplish His will.

Together we considered our status as elect pilgrims (both Jews and Gentiles), and that the world is not our home. We dwelt on what it means to be elect according to God's foreknowledge and considered God's kindness to us in Jesus, choosing us before the foundation of the world for obedience to His gospel. God is sovereign over all events in time and space, and His election of us shows His grace most supremely. There is nothing in and of ourselves that brings us salvation, it is entirely a work of God in His mercy and grace.

Peter is not alone in teaching the doctrine of election, but in fact he learned it directly from Jesus his master. Being elect according to God's foreknowledge is referring to His foreknowing us personally, as we see in every other passage that mentions God foreknowing His people.

… we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,

2 Thessalonians 2:13

We are chosen for salvation and sanctification, being forgiven through the blood of Jesus shed for us, and in this we experience God's grace and perfect peace. Have you been sprinkled by the blood of Jesus? Without His sacrifice to cover your sins you will stand before God and be judged by Him. Call out to Christ as the Lamb of God to take away your sin.
