God Protects His People (2 Kings 19:32-37)

Sermon Summary

Believers are protected by God. The perpetuity of the Jews and the Christian Church evidence this.

This protection was given to Jerusalem, the capital of Judah. Judah was trapped between two super powers vying for its subjugation and world domination. But Jerusalem and Judah were protected.

Note the importance of prayer. Divine protection and human prayer go hand in hand.

Hezekiah, King of Judah, prayed. God sent the prophet Isaiah to him. God’s message was he would defend and save Jerusalem.

Note the evilness of the Assyrians. They were proud. They boasted of their conquests even saying God could not stop their army. They were ultimately f ighting not Jerusalem, but God. All who oppose believers in fact are opposing God. He who is not for the Lord is against him.

Note the providence of God. He gave the Assyrians power to chastise Judah. Judgment begins with the household of God. God uses even evil to achieve his purposes but he is not the author of evil.

God would protect Judah. He created Judah and it bore his name. The divine name would go forth to the world by Judah’s testimony. But that testimony was a poor one. God protects his people to preserve his holy name. If only Assyria and all its modern counterparts understood this.

God would defend and save Jerusalem for David’s sake. David received messianic promises that his seed would live forever. Jesus Christ is that seed. For the sake of David and Jesus, the Son of David, God preserved Jerusalem.

Jerusalem would not perish. There remains unfulfilled prophecy concerning the Jews and Israel. One day all Israel will be saved. God still protects Israel and great blessings remain for modern Israel.

Individually God’s people are protected. Note the testimony of the apostles Peter (Luke 22:31,32), Paul (2 Timothy 4:17) and John (Revelation 1:9,10). Collectively the church of Jesus Christ is protected. It abides forever because its Master lives forever.

In church history believers have been kept by the protection of God. In the post-apostolic age there arose many heresies. God raised up men like Athanasius and Augustine to counter heresy. In the dark ages superstition abounded but God raised up mighty Reformers who dissipated spiritual darkness and superstition. Wyciffe, Tyndale, Luther, Calvin number among these great reformers.

Judah faced two military threats. We face two ideological threats. On the one hand there is atheism. On the other hand there is secular liberalism. God defended and saved Jerusalem. He will deliver and save today’s church. The prayer of Jesus Christ guarantees our safety. But we must pray also.
