God exists. He is the Creator and he has revealed himself in creation. But he has gone further than revelation through creation – he has spoken to the Hebrew people through the prophets, and he has gone even further than the prophets and Israel – he has spoken finally through his Son the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the declaration of Hebrews 1: 1 – 4.
If Jesus Christ is the final revelation of God, what do we know about Him? The Bible gives us information about Jesus. Consider now this information from Hebrews 1: 1 – 4.
His essence. Jesus manifested the glory of God. His disciples saw his glory. They were with Him during his earthly life and their eye-witness testimonies are trustworthy. Jesus was the express image of God. Express image means the exact imprint of God. If Jesus is the exact imprint of God, he must be God.
His energy. Jesus upholds all things by his power. If this were not so, everything would disintegrate. But everything holds together. There is order and predictability in the universe. All things consist in Jesus (Colossians 1: 17).
His expiation. He purged our sins when he shed his blood on the cross and they have been dealt with once and for all. They are forgiven. No other offering needs to be made for the offering of Jesus is sufficient.
His exaltation. Jesus ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God. His work is now done, and he is at rest. Nothing can be added or detracted from his work of salvation.
His excellence. He is superior to the angels. The angels were instrumental in the giving of the law to Israel. Jesus is superior to angels and he has given us his gospel. He is to be listened to.
Jesus is unchanging. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. What he is now, he will be forever.
What relevance is all this to us today?
For unbelievers, Hebrews gives a warning. How shall you escape judgement if you reject the message of Jesus Christ? The message of angels was to be received believingly. How much more the message of Jesus who is greater than the angels.
For believers, take comfort in the promises given by Jesus. For instance, he will never leave you or forsake you. His love and provision are guaranteed.
God has spoken thorough his Son Christ Jesus. There is no other revealer of our Creator. Trust Jesus completely for forgiveness; for all your earthly needs; for your eternal well-being. He will not let you down.
