Jesus, Son of David, Our Deliverer (1 Samuel 17)
Sermon Summary

Jesus claimed the Law of Moses, the prophets and the Psalms spoke of him (Luke 24:27,44). This was quite an outrageous claim. He was saying the entire Old Testament was about him. Clearly, he was either out of his mind or he was speaking the truth.
Jesus never lied. He was not deluded. He spoke truthfully.
There are many Old Testament passages which point to Jesus.
The account of David killing Goliath (1 Samuel 17) is one such passage. David delivered Israel from danger. David was a type of Jesus and so points us to Jesus.
Observe how David’s deliverance of Israel is a foreshadow of Jesus’s deliverance of the church.
David was purposefully prepared. He killed a bear and a lion as he protected his flock. God was preparing David away from the glare of the public. Jesus was being prepared from his youth. At the age of twelve he was capable of questioning and debating with the learned leaders of Israel.
David emerged from obscurity. When David triumphed over Goliath, King Saul and Abner the commander of the army did know who David was. David emerged from obscurity. Like David, Jesus also emerged from obscurity. As he began his ministry people were wondering who he was (Matt. 13:55-58). Jesus, like David, appeared before the public eye from obscurity.
David was rejected by his brethren. When he came to the battlefield his brothers rejected him. Jesus came to his own and his own did not receive him (John 1:11).
David thought spiritually. Others feared Goliath but David said "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (17:26). Jesus was spiritually minded. At the age of twelve he could speak of doing his Father’s will.
David faced the enemy by himself. He was all alone confronting Goliath. Jesus was all alone facing the devil. In the wilderness he entered into conflict alone with Satan — and prevailed.
David faced the enemy on his terms. King Saul equipped David with armour but David rejected the armour. Instead he took his sling and 5 stones. He faced Goliath on his terms. Jesus faced the devil on his terms namely the cross and the shedding of his blood. Goliath and the devil have their way of fighting but Christ had another way — his death on a cross, a way that the enemy did not expect and could not handle. God’s way triumphed.
David killed the enemy. Goliath was slain. Goliath was a type of Satan. Jesus has defeated Satan, the devil. He has triumphed over rulers and authorities and the cosmic forces of evil.
David delivered Israel. One young man, with faith in God and filled with the Holy Spirit saved Israel. Jesus has saved the church. He was filled with the Holy Spirit and has brought about the great deliverance of the church of God. There was only one David. There is only one Jesus — our Deliverer.
The lesson for us is:
Jesus Christ,
Son of David,
Our Deliverer!
