Victory in Spiritual Warfare (Exodus 17:8-16)
Sermon Summary

Amalek was the grandson of Esau. His descendants were also called Amalek. They attacked Israel. The Amalekite hatred of Israel was deep-rooted and long-standing. It went back to Esau and Jacob.
The church also is under attack. The church, like Israel, is chosen and beloved of God. It is in a spiritual war. We do not wrestle with flesh and blood but with the spiritual forces of darkness.
Moses was on a hill holding up the rod of God. The rod stood for the power and authority of God. All authority resides in Almighty God. This authority is given to Jesus Christ.
Moses was the link between earth and heaven. He was an intercessor. Jesus is the link between heaven and earth. He prays for us.
As long as Israel saw, or at least knew, Moses was interceding, it prevailed. As long as we know Jesus lives forever interceding for us we shall prevail. Praise the Lord!
Amalek did not understand the significance of Moses’ intercession. Likewise the devil and his hosts do not understand the significance of Jesus’ intercession for his people. Amalek did not see Moses on the hill. The devil, blinded by darkness, does not see Jesus in the highest hill of all – heaven. Amalek is doomed. It is defeated by the rod of divine authority.
After the victory Moses built an altar. Thanksgiving follows deliverance as it should. Christians give thanks because they have been delivered from the dominion of sin.
Moses called the altar YHWH Nissi which means a banner. God’s banner over his people is a banner of love. Moses attributes the victory over Amalek to God’s love. Deliverance comes to us because of God’s gracious love through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our spiritual war is a continuing one. The Lord would have war with Amalek from generation to generation. Christians must daily put on the armour of God. Be watchful for the devil is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. But he shall be defeated just as Amalek was.
Praise God for the victory we have through Christ Jesus.
