After Jesus was born wise men came from the East seeking him. They eventually found him. Those who diligently seek Jesus will certainly find him. What are you seeking in life? Seeking Jesus is most worthwhile. To find him is to find the greatest treasure of all. We do not know where these man came from or who they were. They were probably Gentiles. The important thing is that they diligently sought Jesus.
In seeking Jesus they show they were aware that salvation is of the Jews for when they arrived in Jerusalem they ask "where is he who is born King of the Jews?" They sought intelligently. They knew salvation came from the Jews. In seeking Jesus they show they were dissatisfied with their own lives. Being Gentiles they would have come from an idolatrous background. Their seeking after Jesus is a fulfilment of that remarkable prophecy in Jeremiah 16:19, "The Gentiles shall come to you from the ends of the earth and say, ‘Surely our fathers have inherited worthlessness and unprofitable things.’ " In seeking Jesus they caused a stir in Jerusalem. King Herod was troubled and all Jerusalem with him (2:3). Herod was troubled because the coming of a Jewish king was a threat to his power. The inhabitants of Jerusalem were troubled because they were comfortable with Roman rule. It is an indictment of the Jews in Jerusalem for when they heard about the birth of their King they did not go with the wise men to find him. Be sure that if you diligently seek Jesus some people will be troubled. They do not like it when you get serious about Jesus. I have seen this borne out in families where young people seek Jesus and parents get concerned. They do not want their children to get too involved in religion especially the religion of Jesus Christ. "Go to church" they say "but do not get baptised." In seeking Jesus the wise men are guided by the prophetic word of God for the Scriptures spoke of the Saviour being born in Bethlehem (2:6) and to Bethlehem they must go. They are also guided supernaturally by a mysterious star sent from God. When this star stopped over where the child Jesus was the wise men had great joy. They knew, by God’s guidance, they had arrived at the place where the child was. When we find what we seek for we have great joy. A student learns he has graduated. A mother gives birth to her child. A man gains promotion at work. When such people find the things they seek they are joyous. So the wise men when they find the child they seek have exceedingly great joy (2:10). The wise men saw the young child (2:11). This was the climax of their journey. To see the one they sought brought fulfilment to their journey. Seekers will be finders. Seek Jesus and you will find him. These men sought diligently and they found what they sought for. Those who come to God will find that God rewards those who seek diligently (Hebrew 11:6). The wise men do something quite remarkable. They fall on their knees and worship the young child (2: 11). Is this not idolatry? It certainly is were it not for the fact that the child they worshipped is God manifest in the flesh! What a remarkable scene! Grown men worshipping a child! Yet it is a scene that will be repeated again one day because this child is the King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev. 19:16) and every knee shall ultimately bow before him (Philippians 2:10). The wise men then gave gifts - gold, frankincense and myrrh. These were precious gifts - gifts befitting a King. The men gave the very best to Jesus indicating that believers must give their best to the Lord. The most precious gift you can give to him is your life. Give your life to Jesus today and live for his service. To find Christ you must determinedly commit yourself to him. You may believe in God but this not enough. Demons believe in God! You must make a final commitment to Jesus just as these wise men did when they worshipped him. God’s effectual calling is a process that culminates in commitment to Jesus Christ. Some people are unbelievers. Others believe in God but are uncommitted to Christ. I do not say that such believers are saved for they must seek out Christ and commit to him. Salvation is in Christ and Christ alone. Finally, consider again the testimony of these wise men from the East. They came seeking Jesus and they found him. Herein is the lesson for us. Those who seek the Lord Jesus will find him. This Christmas seek the Lord with all your heart. He will be found by those who seek him diligently. |
