Numbers 14:11-25

The Israelites rebel & refuse to enter promised land. God threatens judgment. Moses intercedes for Israel. Numbers 14:11-25 teaches us the nature of intercessory prayer. Moses is impassioned with prayer.

Jesus was all-consumed by his life of intercession.

Intercessory prayer is:

(1) Necessary v11-12. God will judge. Therefore prayer is necessary.
(2) Reasoned v13-16 Moses reasons with God. If God judges Israel the pagan nations will come to false conclusions. God, Moses argues, cannot allow this.
(3) Bold v17-19 Moses boldly holds the Lord to his word. He boldly prays the Lord to pardon.
(4) Effectual v20-25. The Lord pardons. Note severity and mercy of God.

All-consuming intercessory prayer is seen in Solomon at dedication of temple; Elijah in battle with idolatry and supremely in Jesus during his life on earth.

Jesus was consumed by his intercessory ministry.

Lesson: INTERCESSORY PRAYER IS ALL-CONSUMING. Be an intercessor. Stand in the gap for needy people.
