Joseph H. Gilmore was a highly respected pastor at the First Baptist Church in Philadelphia. In 1859, age 24, he spoke at a mid-week service from Psalm 23:2 on 'He Leadeth Me'.

After the service he quickly wrote on a scrap of paper at a host's home the words of 'He Leadeth Me', handed it to his wife and forgot about it. Unknown to him she sent it to the Watchman and Reflector magazine.

Three years later when he was about to preach at the Second Baptist Church, Rochester, New York, he was pleased and greatly surprised to see his words, 'He Leadeth Me', in the Rochester hymn book with music by William Bradbury.

Josepth Gilmore penned other hymns but his quickly written hymn 'He Leadeth Me' was sung most widely.

Scriptures

...you...are kept by the pwer of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:5).

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials (1 Peter 1:6).
